Fouth of July 1/2

A/N: My first two parter :D Isn't this exciting? I was meant to have this written for the actual 4th of July, but I went on holiday and never got it done. Had it written down on as a script on paper and decided to flesh it out today.

The idea came when I was vidding the song Airplanes. In my part of the vid it looks like they're all watching fireworks and Dean's thinking about the time he and Sam set off the fireworks when they were younger.

Song: Airplanes - B.O.B. ft Haley Williams

“It’s the fourth of July y’know,” Emmy said with a bright smile directed at the slightly sulky Dean located in the seat next to her. His grip on the wheel of the Impala tightened slightly and he pursed his lips a little. If Emmy hadn’t known better she’d think he was angry at her. It was probably the fact Sam and Lauren had been nattering about Anna Karenina in the back seat for about an hour that had made him so irritable.

“So what?” Was his eventual reply, and although it was snapped at her, Emmy saw no reason to not persevere with her point.

“It’s the fourth of July.” She stated again, keeping her eyes trained on his profile. Sam and Lauren’s chatter had ceased in the back leaving a slightly strained silence hanging in the air.

“So what?” Dean asked once again the sarcasm literally dripping off the monosyllables.

“It’s the fourth of July.” She pressed, stressing the last words, hoping Dean would catch on to her vague intention.

“So-“

“Ah patriotism, separating us from the animals.” Lauren cut in with a thinly veiled barb towards Dean that she doubted he would catch on to. Sam, in the seat beside her, gave her one of his looks before turning his attention to Emmy who was preparing for another verbal assault on Dean.

“Emmy, we’re not really big into celebrating indepen-“ He began a doomed attempt to defend Dean’s briskness.

“Are you British?” She asked in an incredulous voice. Sam shook his head in disbelief at such a ridiculous question.

“Of course not.” He replied. She waved her hand dismissively in his direction.

“It was a rhetorical question.” She swiveled in her seat, tugging at her seatbelt so she had enough slack to face Lauren in the seat behind her. “Lauren, you celebrate it big in your family right?”

“Oh yeah,” Lauren replied with a smile, “St. Louis style.”

“Slammin’” Emmy deadpanned.

“Pimpin’”

“Bitchin’”

Sam looked between the two as their bizarre exchange unfolded. He swore they got more peculiar every day they spent together, although the way Lauren jumped from discussing Tolstoy to exchanging ridiculous colloquialisms made him smile.

“We haven’t got a job, we could go to a fireworks show,” Lauren suggested.

“No.” Dean stated, his tone suggesting he wanted that to be the end of the conversation entirely. Lauren scowled in his direction. Dean always disregarded everything she said if he could. She made a mental note to discretely spill something in the Impala in the near future.

“Exactly why can’t we go to a fireworks display?” She asked quietly. Dean rolled his eyes skywards then settled them back on the road before eliciting a response.

“I’m in charge and I don’t wanna.”

“In charge...” She mimicked the words under her breath and wondered when this decision had been made. She certainly didn’t remember voting for him. Fascist.

“Last time we celebrated the fourth of July was...” Sam spoke suddenly, a far off look in his eyes, as if he was remembering something from a very long time ago.

“Yeah, I remember.” Dean replied shortly, although some of the earlier bite had faded from his words.

“Why not something like that again? Just us.” Sam suggested, the faintest of smiles tugging at the corners of his mouth.

“Huh,” Dean said faintly as if testing the idea in his head before making a proper response. “I guess we could do that.” Emmy smiled brightly, having eventually won her case. She wasn’t exactly sure what the boys had in mind but she had a feeling it was going to be spectacular.
