Lauren. The Insomniac.

Disclaimer: I don't own anything, bar Emmy and Lauren, and even then Lauren is only half mine.
Song: Far from home by five finger death punch :)
For: Junieontheedge for writing brilliant oneshots and always keeping me in a ready-to-write mood!

Lauren enjoyed the silence usually; it kept her company on the nights she couldn’t slip into a comfortable sleep. Often the quiet breathing coming from all directions of the room was her soundtrack to the nights she couldn’t drift off. She sighed loudly, hoping it would detract someone from their dreams and give her something to do before they slipped back into their slumbers. No one stirred.
Shuffling quietly to the end of the bed she stretched around in the darkness, her hands finally brushing against the cold plastic of the television remote. She pressed down hopefully on it, searching out the correct button. After a few tries the room lit up with the bright light of Carson Daily’s face. Lauren desperately clicked the mute button before the delayed boom of the crappy motel television awoke the others. She watched the green volume line decrease further and further until it reached a suitable level, so she could watch it without distracting anyone else.
Flicking through the channels, she yawned. It was just her body’s way of telling her that she should be asleep. A polar bear graced the screen before flicking onto an overweight mother of four, speaking about healthy eating. Lauren scrunched her face up. Night time television sucked. She went back a channel, to the image of the majestic white polar bear making its way across the vast ice.

“The polar bears are the largest of the bear family, often weighing in at around 1,500 pounds. Their large feet and short, stocky claws are perfect for the ice terrain.”

Lauren watched, mouth agape at the animal. Not out of awe, but her body no longer had the energy to keep it closed.
Lauren jumped as a shadow slipped out of one of the beds and made its way to the television. Emmy’s face flashed into view as the television’s light cut out and silence descended once more.
“Emmy, I was watching that!” She whispered into the dark. Lauren paused as the remote was pulled from her grasp and thrown across the room. It hit the wall with a small crash. Lauren jumped, if Dean woke up now he’d most likely kill her, despite the fact it was by Emmy’s hands that the remote had collided with the wall. The batteries rolled across the cold wooden floor for what seemed like an eternity. It prolonged her anxiety. She sat quietly, just waiting for the light to turn on and Dean to start yelling. Nothing happened. She was amazed. Sam and Dean really could sleep through anything.
The springs of her friend’s mattress told Lauren Emmy had returned to her bed, satisfied with the new level of quiet.
Lauren sighed again; the narrator’s line echoed in her head, she would probably remember it for a while. She was good at remembering useless stuff like that, she recited it over and over, “The polar bears are the largest of the bear family, often weighing in at around 1,500 pounds…” A pillow smacked her in the face, her cue to shut up. “Night, Em.”
She got no reply.

  1. Oh, I love, love, love this! It's like me and my room mate at Uni (I dropped out, wasn't my thing). Maybe that's how I should write Lauren...

But you go back to studying young lady! (Did I manage to sound all grown up?) I'll write you something you can read after the exams are over, OK?
